Simple ATM Safety Tips
The main goal of the ATM Crime Prevention Program is to keep users safe.
Since there are many types of ATMs, and each one has unique features and risks, there isn't a one-size-fits-all solution for safety. So, ATM users need to think about their surroundings and follow safety steps when using an ATM.
Criminals usually target people who seem unaware or unprepared. You can avoid being a target by being alert and confident. Here are some tips to help you stay safe while using an ATM.
General Safety Tips
- Walk with confidence and look like you're aware of your surroundings.
- Pay attention to what's happening around you. Criminals avoid people who do this.
- Think about what you'd do in different dangerous situations.
- Trust your instincts. If you feel unsafe, act right away. Your safety comes first.
Choosing an ATM
Law sets basic rules for ATM lighting and safety evaluations, but it's still important to choose a safe ATM. Consider these points:
- Avoid ATMs on building corners since they have blind spots. Choose an ATM in the middle of a building instead.
- Pick an ATM that's easy to see from the surrounding area. Criminals don't want to be seen.
- Choose an ATM without barriers, like bushes or signs, that could hide criminals.
- Make sure the ATM is well-lit.
- Try to use ATMs with security guards nearby.
- Look for ATMs with wide-angle cameras or continuous surveillance. Ask the bank or location manager for this info.
- Check crime stats for the area around the ATM.
- Stay away from ATMs with big parking lots and many entrances and exits.
Before and During Transactions
- Watch for suspicious people or activity near the ATM. Be cautious of anyone sitting in a parked car close by.
- If something seems off, leave and come back later. Cancel your transaction if needed.
- Keep some deposit envelopes on hand. Fill out paperwork before going to the ATM to save time.
- Stay aware of your surroundings during the transaction. Don't get too focused on it.
- Don't wear expensive jewelry or bring valuables to the ATM.
- Put cash away right after getting it. Don't count it at the ATM.
- Don't accept help from strangers. Ask the bank for assistance.
- Never lend your ATM card to anyone. Treat it like cash or a credit card.
- If using a drive-up ATM, keep your car doors and windows locked.
- At night, consider bringing a friend, park close to the ATM, and lock your car. Don't use the ATM if the lights aren't working.
- Make sure you're not being followed when leaving the ATM. If you are, go to a safe, crowded place and make noise to get attention.
- If confronted by an armed attacker, give them your money or valuables. Don't resist – you can replace lost items later.
Fraud Tips
- Memorize your Personal Identification Number (PIN). Don't write it down or share it with anyone.
- Cover the ATM keypad when entering your PIN so no one can see it. Use your body as a shield if needed.
- Keep your transaction receipt. Don't throw it away at the ATM.
- Call the National Fraud Information Center at 1-800-876-7060 for info on ATM frauds and scams, or visit fraud.org.
- Report lost or stolen ATM cards immediately.
Remember, you can never be too careful, prepared, or aware when it comes to your security. Share this information with friends and family to keep everyone safe and informed.
